Underwater Modem

  • I am looking for a modem to work under water. The modem should be low cost and preferably battery powered. When I say under water I mean that a diver/vehicle will be working underwater and some sensors on him need to transmit serial (RS232) data to a computer on the surface. This modem should be able to transmit that data through the water without using a wire. The distance underwater to the surface is very small - about 25 meters max. Think swimming pool sized areas. I know of underwater modems that are for use at sea, but those are over the top in size, price for a swimming pool sized operation. Thanks

  • Would something like this UVM1000 work? http://www.link-quest.com/html/models1.htm jbf777-ga GA Researcher

  • Again, size matters... I had seen the Benthos units you refer too (had already searched for underwater acoustic modem and variants). It is too big and heavy. The datasonics unit (e.g. see http://www.mkservices.demon.co.uk/mks/telesonar.htm) is capable of operation to 2000 meters - this is an overkill for our application. I need something small for use in a swimming pool (about 100th the distance of what those units can transmit), and I was hoping for something 10th the size.

  • I tried making contact with this company on the offchance they may have something for underwater use even though I cannot find anything on their site regarding this. So far (4 days) they have made no response so I am posting a response. The concept of a typical radio working underwater is extremely unlikely though, and is something I investigated first... Most underwater modems are accoustic are because they work at an incredibly low frequency that will travel through water, but requires high power transmission. Normal wireless radios like the ones you would work a very very small distance underwater so would be impractical, even for this type of application. I'd love for the company (or someone) to tell me otherwise, but so far they've made no reply.

  • I have found these products. http://www.romor.ns.ca/products/underwateracoustics.htm http://www.e-insite.net/ednmag/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA60930 If any of these products are the ones you require, I will post it as an answer and collect the fee. Just let me know. :)

  • This looks to come close to your needs: http://www.radio-tech.co.uk/ and click on "Radio Modems": "RTcom-RS232-Compact- L or -S Modem: New for April 2003, this compact, fully submersible, Ip68++ encased modem is ideal for applications demanding a highly rugged design at and affordable price" The unit is small, self-contained. I contacted the company, and they quoted a price of 100 Euros, which is roughly $100. The only down side is the range, which appears to be 10M. However, you may want to contact the company about your needs to see if they can accomodate you. If this turns out to be successful, let me know, and I will post this as an answer. Good luck in your efforts.

  • I did see those when I searched. They all looked to big for a diver to have. I guess I should have said size matters too.
